The vascular laboratory at Vascular Associates of San Diego is a dedicated, full-service noninvasive vascular imaging center conveniently located in our office. Our lab is one of only a select few in San Diego county with the distinction of being certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).
Utilizing duplex ultrasound technology many vascular conditions can be identified without risk or discomfort to the patient. Ultrasound studies that are available include abdominal duplex scanning for aortic aneurysm disease, venous duplex scanning for deep venous thrombosis and venous insufficiency, and arterial scanning for carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, renal artery disease and peripheral aneurysms. These noninvasive studies are used to detect the presence of new or recurrent vascular conditions, to determine the severity of disease, and to allow surveillance by which to detect disease progression. Noninvasive vascular imaging also allows us to assess the response to treatment and the durability of these treatments.
The vascular laboratory has a comprehensive quality assessment program correlating ultrasound findings with those of other imaging modalities as well as surgical findings. All studies are interpreted by a board certified vascular surgeon and results are typically available on the same day of the study. A full-time vascular technologist performs all the studies. Our current technologists, Theresa and Aimee, are graduates of Grossmont College, a nationally recognized vascular ultrasonography training program.
Ultrasound scanning is non-invasive (no needles or injections) and is painless. Ultrasound imaging uses no ionizing radiation and therefore causes no health problems and may be repeated as often as is necessary if medically indicated.
At Vascular Associates of San Diego a physician specifically trained to supervise and interpret vascular laboratory examinations, will analyze the images and share the results with you. A report is also sent to your primary care or referring physician upon request.
